Alps 2 Ocean - Day 2: Lake Pukaki to Twizel and Lake Ohau Lodge

Friday, 21 November

Woke up early and got an early start on the day. Packed the tent and opted to bike the first 11km to Twizel and have a good breakfast there.

The ride from our campsite near the lake to Twizel was a completely different experience than the day before. This ride was on land that was dry and brown and hilly - terrain on opposite ends of the spectrum from snow-covered mountains and turquoise blue lake. Different, but beautiful non-the-less!!

Implementing the "sleep cheap, eat well" strategy.

Today's ride took us through back roads and along a canal where salmon are raised and caught, across a dam, over a  weir, and around the southern tip of Lake Ohau.

Along the way we met some guys with a nice big catch.

I regularly see such great cloud formations - long smooth white clouds, and sometimes they have interesting wispy lines/steps.

Lake Ohau

Once again, as we round the lake to head north the vicious Northwesterlies showed their power and as it began to rain lightly, we were more motivated to keep pedaling to reach our destination - Lake Ohau Lodge. We walked inside and were greeted by a warm wood fire and cozy couches in a well-kept old camp lodge!

Had some delicious hot soup and bread, then relaxed a bit by the fire. Poor dad's legs were feeling it from the two days biking... I'm thinking about sending this pic to the Lodge as it might help their accommodation promotions to tired cyclists... haha!

Cool pic on the wall at the Lodge:

When the rain cleared up and dad got a nap in, we set up the tent just outside the lodge, and went directly to the hot tub where we soaked and chatted about the deeper things in life (and how sore dad's legs are...) ;)
